I've been been through 8-10 bike racks over the last 40 years, and most of them have been good at accommodating bikes with the traditional crossbar design.As my wife and I have gotten "old" and adapt to various joint "issues", we have gravitated to bikes with designs that allow more comfort. My wife rides a beach cruiser with a "girls" frame, and I ride an extended length bike with a more curved support frame. Neither of these bikes work well with the traditional hanger type rack that fits into the 2"hich receiver on our van.The Swagman XCountry solves this problem. The bike wheels are supported in wheel wells rather than hanging by their frames, so it doesn't matter what kind of frame the bike has. The Swagman is easy on, easy off, and easy store. I've been very satisfied. I have one suggestion, though. When you puchase the Swagman, call the manufacturer and order a locking threaded hitch pin for about $25. The threaded hitch pin that comes with the unit is really good at preventing the rack from wobbling,but it doesn't lock the draw bar to the hitch receiver.

I just bought this bike for a bike trip I took with a friend of mine. I drive a Toyota 4runner, 4wd, with a two inch hitch receiver. I was nervous about buying a bike rack online, but the price made me take the chance.

When I got the rack and opened it up, I was immediately impressed by the welded, heavy metal construction of the rack. However, the instruction manual had me nervous: it said the rack should be used on paved or gravel roads only. Well, I was going to be driving through some pretty hairy 4-wheel drive situations and needed something with stability. I decided to go for it anyway, hooked up the rack, and was on my way.

After 3 days of two-track, dirt track, steep inclines and muddy sliding, the bike rack is in perfect condition. My bikes were protected, secure and safe. Loading and unloading was a breeze. For $129 you could not do better. I'm willing to bet you couldn't do better with the other $300 - $500 models out there anyway.

Now, a little bit about why this Swagman model is better than the $99 Allen version. The SWAGMAN you see here is equipped with a bottom carrier. In case you hadn't noticed, the bottom carrier attaches to the wheels and wheels on bikes are ALWAYS ROUND. Crazy, I know. The Allen version (with the top straps) is common amongst bike carriers (trunk mounted and hitch alike). These bikes wrap around the top frame of the bike. Here is the rub: NOT ALL BIKE FRAMES ARE THE SAME. I have a V-frame bike and those straps do not wrap around. Other bike frames are very narrow; some are very thick - the point being that those straps are not going to work for every bike. The SWAGMAN does. Its wheel base supports are adjustable. The locking center clasp simply applies pressure to the center of the frame. It can't go wrong.

In conclusion, save yourself a lot of money and buy the SWAGMAN version here. Save yourself a headache and opt for the bottom, wheel attachment carriers over the other varieties. For an extra $30 over the Allen, you'll be riding pretty - guaranteed.

Already being the owner of a Saris Bones trunk rack and having spent long periods of time hooking it to my car so that it could dent my bumper and rub paint off my trunk, I figured it was time to get a hitch put on and get a rack that wouldn't damage my car. Racks on which you hang the top tube of your bike were out of the hunt because I was all too familiar with the handlebars twisting, the wheels spinning and having to put the adapter bar on my wife's bike to appropriately hang it. I was surprised and a bit skeptical when I found this rack for $150, but we bought it.

Assembly of the rack went smoothly (no missing parts or misaligned holes). Attaching the rack to the hitch is smooth and easy. The fact that the rack hinges and is locked in place with ball lock pins is nice. When not in use, the rack folds up and hangs quite compactly in our garage. Forget the locking hitch pins and all those other accessories to keep your rack secure. The rack removes, folds and fits easily in your locked trunk in less than a minute and remains secure while you are riding your bike and it's just as quick to reattach. So far we've hauled the bikes 350 miles each way for vacation and multiple short trips to bike paths. All the bolts have stayed snug as I check them frequently.

The rack has been wonderful thus far and we have had no problems. The best features of this rack are 1)Quality and style for a good price 2)Fold up feature makes it compact for temporary (trunk) storage or long-term storage 3)Fast and easy to attach and detach from hitch and 4)Insanely quick and easy, once the rack has been adjusted the first time, to mount your bikes. I needed a bike rack that would work for my road bike and my wife's Schwinn cruiser that doesn't have a top bar. There are products that that attach to the bike to simulate a top bar so I can hang it but this Swagman bike rack takes care of the problem without the extra equipment. The rack takes some assembly but very easy in my opinion. The rack is not that heavy and attached right to my Yukon. When you set the bracket widths to your bike and snug the padded hook down, the bikes are nice and secure. The Schwinn was secure even with the low point of contact for the hook. I was very impressed with the functionality and ease of use. Would recommend for any bike but especially when you need to carry bikes without the top bar.

I bought the Swagann XC for use on a 2008 Jeep Patriot. But their receiver bar is too short to allow room for a bicycle to be positioned in the location closest to the vehicle. As a result only one bicycle can be carried in the outer location. I called Swagman customer service and all they had to say was tough luck. As a result, to carry two bicycles I will have to go to Northern Tool and spend another $40 for a receiver extension.

Very impressed with the rack set up and ease of use. The description does not do this bike rack justice. Very functional and easy to mount the bikes on even if they are odd frame shapes or sizes. They ride very securely and the rack has very little wiggle with no noise. Center arm moves out of the way to open the tailgate (if no bike is attached). Arms that hold the bike ratchet down and lock until a clip is pressed to release them. I love it, money well spent.

I got this rack mainly to carry 1 recumbent on the back of my minivan. The Swagman rack does this successfully, but just barely adjusts enough to fit the bike in the wheel holders with one of the hoops slid all the way to the end. On the plus side, it's quite easy to put the bike on and the bike is very stable, with almost no movement. I use an old leather toeclip strap on the back wheel because it could slide within the hoop. Some other brands include velcro straps or provide other means of securing the wheels. Another plus is that it folds easily for storage and the top tube folds down to open the van's tailgate. The frame clamp slides quickly into place and holds the bike securely.

On the minus side, this rack, unlike similar brands, does not incorporate a hitch riser. The rack rides lower to the road than I'd like, especially with the long bar it uses to go into the hitch receiver. Another minus is that the locking balls on the pins that keep the folding sections in place are almost too small to remain in the holes. They do have little wire keepers and thankfully none have come out yet. A third minus is that the metal brackets used to attach the wheel hoops are lighter than they should be and seem to have bent down slightly from use. Finally, some other brands come with an adapter to allow use with either size of hitch, while the Swagman is for 2" only.

In sum, if this is the only brand you can find, it will probably do the job. However, I'd try to find another brand that overcomes some of the minuses I've found.

First off you may be confused by the picture of the rack on Amazon. It is a model 64650 with a curved receiver, the one pictured is an older model with a streight receiver. also the 2" adapter is like the new model 64670 with metal plates. You may have read complaints about a plastic adapter. The pin for the reciever is threaded (to firm it up)so a regular hitch pin won't work unless you drill it out. as of 7/24/2009 Amazon shipping was free and no sales tax to Cali :)

Fairly easy to mount and remove bicycles. I like the bikes' weight riding on the tires rather than on the center frame. The plastic adaptor for a 2" receiver did not provide adequate support for me, so I bought a metal adaptor. The included screw-in pin is difficult to quickly install and remove, would rather have a larger opening for a standard hitch lock.

I just purchased one of these along with the locking 5/8 hitch pin in what I thought was a nice package. However, now that I've actually received the rack the combination is useless. They have changed the design of the attachment to the hitch. Instead of a standard 5/8 pin, it uses a proprietary threaded bolt which is too small to allow the use of a hitch pin. The advantage is that the rack can be attached tightly to the hitch. The (major) disadvantage is that it now requires a wrench to install and remove. Had I known this I probably would have bought a different model, and definitely not bought the locking pin. When I called Swagman to complain they tried to blame Amazon for having outdated information. However, Swagman's own support website has the old design in the instructions, which do not match the product I received. The representative tried to convince me it was an improvement, I don't agree.

UPDATE:

I contacted Swagman again about my concerns and they sent me an old style connector bar for free. Kudos to them for great customer service, if I could I would add another star to my rating. However, my concerns above about the new design are still an issue. As I mentioned, it now requires a wrench to install/remove. Also, as mentioned in another review the threads on the hitch pin don't seem to operate smoothly out of the box. If they were to become damaged (seems quite possible) then you would not be able to use the rack at all. I understand what they were trying for with the new design, but it seems like change for the sake of change rather than a true improvement.

I found my Swagman to be a sturdy well designed bicycle rack that was easy to set up. It carries my bike securily with it's locking levers although to be even safer I use a cargo type rubber strap to secure bike to rack along with a locking cable. The 5/8" hitch lock offed by Amazon for purchase with it does not fit the drilled hole, which starts out 5/8" and steps down to 1/2", instead I used the locking pin furnished with the rack and the above mentioned lockable cable.
I would recommend this hitch mount rack.

Even if you only need to carry one bike, this is the rack to have. I have had 3 other big name racks of varying style and this is by far the best for the money. Not only is it simple to use, but it is simple to assemble. Right out of the box it is 90% assembled. Another big plus is the length of the hitch receiver bar. This rack clears my bumper perfectly with my Hidden Hitch, which was a concern of mine while shopping racks. No hitch extension needed! This is also the best, and in my opinion the only way to rack a bike. The wheels are kept stable and the frame grip arms keep your bike nice and snug without causing any scuff to your bikes paint. The company recently changed the hitch pin to a screw in bolt, which some claim is not as easy due to the need for a wrench to get it on and off, but it does keep the rack much more sturdy and rattle free and also would make theft of the rack much more complicated to a would be thief. Just keep a 23mm socket in your vehicle and you'll be fine. I would recommend adding a large washer to the hitch bolt to get a better grip and keep the bolt from scratching your hitch.

After shopping around everywhere on-line, including the classified and auction sites, this was the best deal in a reliable bike rack I could find. Combined with free shipping, it ended up being less than half of the price of the alternatives! This rack is really solid and very quick to take the bikes on and off. It is especially nice that the vertical bar can be rotated flat. This allows quick and painless access into the back of hatchback vehicles without having to remove the rack. A lot of good engineering thought went into this device.

There are two minor points that prevent this item from having five stars. First, beware of the ratcheting top clamps, as they can be a real finger pincher if you are not careful. Second, even though the rack goes together painlessly and quickly, it would be better if the documentation discussed the more subtle but nice features and the best ways of loading and using the rack. For example it is important that the chain side of the two bikes face away from the center post, otherwise there is a clearance problem getting both bikes to fit. Another is the best way to load the first bike (remove both top clamps and rotate the vertical bar down to the back tire position). And yet another is the best approach for optimum positioning of the tire rings (keep all four loose until everything fits, no rubbing points exist and the bikes are centered behind the vehicle).

All in all a great and solid product that will certainly outlast the bicycles it will be hauling around!
